The gripper shirt is the one that surprises people who have only worn buttons. A gripper is a snap: you pull the front apart in one movement at the end of a shift and press it back together without looking down, which matters when your hands are wet or greasy and you are stepping out of a walk-in. It also means the shirt comes off fast if something hot lands on it. The button-front shirt trades that for a flatter front that does not catch on a rack and sits better under an apron bib all day.

Everything else on this page is shared. A one-piece collar, which is a single folded band rather than a stand and a collar sewn together, so there is less to fray and less to press. A left chest pocket for a pen. A squared bottom on the button-front shirt, cut to be worn tucked in or left out. And the long cook shirt, which is the answer to the commonest complaint about a shirt in a kitchen -- that it works its way out of an apron waist by the middle of service -- cut longer in the body and available in a tall run.

Questions about Chef Designs Cook Shirts

What the back of house wears

What is a five-gripper closure on a Chef Designs cook shirt?

Five metal snaps down the front instead of buttons. They pull apart in one movement and press back together without looking, which is why they are the choice for dish and prep, where hands are wet all shift.

Can you wear a Chef Designs cook shirt instead of a chef coat?

That is what it is for. A shirt is a single layer with a collar and a chest pocket, so it is cooler and lighter than a double-breasted coat, and it is what most kitchens put on prep, dish, counter and delivery. What it does not give you is the two layers of cloth across the chest a coat has.

Which Chef Designs shirt stays tucked in?

The long cook shirt: it is cut longer in the body for exactly that reason and comes in a tall run as well. The standard shirt has a squared bottom meant to work either way.

Every closure, every run

Every coat, shirt, pant, apron and hat in the Chef Designs range sits behind this button, with the price from our last update against each one.
