A coat here is double-breasted because a kitchen coat has been double-breasted for a hundred and fifty years, and for the same reason: two layers of cloth across the chest is what stands between you and a pan lifted off a flat top. The front is what separates the cards on this page. Eight pearl buttons is the standard set, ten places them closer with more overlap, and the knot-button coat trades a moulded button for a tied one that survives a hot press but eventually works loose in a commercial dryer. On the white coats the buttons are made not to yellow, which is the single detail that decides whether the coat still looks new at the end of a season of laundry.

The sleeve is the second decision, and the one a photograph will not make for you. A full sleeve covers the forearm at a flat top and can be pushed up because the cuffs are vented and clean-finished. A 3/4 sleeve clears a sink and a low pass and is the one prep sections order. A 1/2 sleeve is the summer coat for a kitchen with no air handling, and it is the coat that gets asked for in July and regretted in January. All of them carry a chest pocket, the pearl-button coats add a narrow thermometer pocket on the left sleeve, and the run goes from XS to 5XL with tall sizes on the eight-pearl line.

Every colourway here is priced on its own; the Chef Designs order sheet keeps the figures current and the till is what decides.

Questions about Chef Designs Chef Coats

Every coat on one page

Which Chef Designs chef coat should you order first?

The eight pearl button coat in white, on the numbers: it carries the largest pool of ratings of anything we make and it is the coat the rest of the shelf is compared against. If the pass is visible from the dining room, the ten pearl button coat is the same coat with a closer, dressier front; if you work a hot section, take the 3/4 sleeve.

Are Chef Designs coats cut the same for men and women?

No. The women's coat is its own cut with ten pearl buttons and a stand-up collar, shaped through the body rather than straight, and sized S to 3XL. The rest of the shelf is a straight cut sized XS to 5XL and worn by everybody.

Do Chef Designs chef coats shrink in a commercial wash?

The cloth is pre-shrunk before the coat is cut, which is what the term on the card means: the shrinkage is taken out at the mill rather than left for your laundry to find. The label sewn into the coat governs the wash, and where it and this page disagree, the label wins.
